Ceramic Windshield Tint for Texas Heat
October 6th, 2025. Jason Kimbler, owner, Mother’s Window Tint. Austin.
Ceramic windshield tint blocks ninety-nine percent of UV (ultraviolet) and up to ninety percent of the IR (infrared heat). That is forty percent TSER (total solar energy rejected). Legal in Texas — Mother's Window Tint installs it daily.
Ceramic windshield tint in Austin is a game changer — and I say that all the time, because it’s true.
The old visor strip
For years, the only option for a front windshield was a dark strip across the top, basically an extension of your sun visors. It blocked visible light, but it did nothing for the heat coming through the rest of the glass.
What changed
Then two things changed. Ceramic film technology advanced to the point where a nearly clear film could block serious heat. And Texas law changed to allow a film that blocks 99% of UV (ultraviolet) and IR (infrared) on the front windshield. Those two developments came together, and for the first time, drivers finally had a real option.
That option is a relatively clear ceramic film applied to the entire front windshield. It blocks ninety-nine percent of UV (ultraviolet) and up to ninety percent of the IR (infrared heat), with no visible light blockage. That is forty percent TSER (total solar energy rejected). You get the heat rejection without the darkness.
By reducing glare by twenty percent, it also makes the road easier to see in bright conditions. Less squinting, less eye strain, better contrast.
Not a dark windshield
We’ve been installing windshield film for a long time now. Before ceramic, people were putting dark film on windshields — and that’s never what you want. You might think a light film that’s legal on your front doors, like a thirty-five percent, would be fine on the windshield. It’s not. With the combined effect of all the tint on the vehicle, a dark windshield dramatically inhibits your visibility — not just at night, but during the day too. You don’t see as clearly out, and it can affect your driving. No matter what type of material it is, you only want a film that doesn’t obstruct your vision. That’s exactly why ceramic is the game changer.
The largest piece of glass
The windshield is usually the largest piece of glass on any vehicle, and it’s the one that lets in the most heat. It’s the one that, until now, could never really be done. Now it can — and it’s so worth it.
If you have your windshield tinted once, you’ll want it on every car you ever own from there on out. You’ll get into a rental or your friend’s car and immediately know the windshield isn’t tinted — your hands are burning, and there’s so much heat coming through that your climate control can’t keep up. It’s like a hot-and-cold experience.
