Clean tinted windows without ruining film
January 26th, 2026. Jason Kimbler, owner, Mother’s Window Tint. Austin.
Clean tinted windows with soap, water, and a microfiber cloth. Skip ammonia and razors. Mother's Window Tint tells you the day a wash is safe.
Tinted glass in Austin is not regular glass. Ammonia and grit can haze the film and scratch it. Here’s how to clean it right.
The cure window
After a new install, the front and door windows stay up for three to five days to cure. A house or storefront waits longer before the first wash, usually a week or more.
Cleaning the inside follows the same rule. Wait the three to five days before wiping the interior surface.
Austin heat changes the cure. It can speed the process, often within twenty-four hours. You still want to wait the full three to five days. Until then, don’t wipe it, and don’t let anyone spray cleaner on it.
After the cure
Once the film is cured, use a soft cloth. Microfiber or something like it. A newer microfiber tends to work better on grease or haze.
- Mild soap and water. Light pressure.
- No ammonia. No vinegar. No Windex-style glass cleaner. Those eat the film and the adhesive over time.
- Paper towels in a pinch. Microfiber is gentler.
- No razor, scraper, or steel wool on the film.
- No heavy scrubbing while it is curing, or after.
Tiny water specks
Tiny water specks in the first stretch are often what cures first. That is not a defect. Leave them alone.
If bubbling is still there after the time we gave you, call the shop. That is not normal curing. That is something we need to look at.
The bottom line
Tint is a different surface than plain glass. Treat it gently, wait for the cure, and skip the ammonia. Do that and the film lasts the life of the vehicle.
The outside of the glass can still be washed like normal glass. The film is on the inside. Hose dust off the paint and the outside of the windows whenever you want. The rule is for the film side. If a sticker, a suction cup, or a razor has already marked it, do not keep scraping. That scratch is in the film, and more cleaner will not lift it.
On a house or a storefront in Austin, wait the week we give you before the first indoor wash. Construction dust and a dry paper towel are what haze a new job. A damp microfiber and mild soap are enough after that. If the film we installed lifts, that is a warranty look, not a harder scrub.
