Front door glass of vehicles in Texas

January 19th, 2026. Jason Kimbler, owner, Mother’s Window Tint. Austin.

A 35% film on front door glass that already passes about 70% of the light lands near the Texas 25% line. There is no magic 25% film. Mother's Window Tint.

On an Austin vehicle, a 35% film does not leave the front door at 35%. The glass is already in the way. Untinted front door glass on most vehicles is clear, and it usually transmits about 70% of the light before any film goes on. Put a 35% film on that glass and the finished door lands close to 25%, which is the Texas line.

That is why the front-door film is 35%, not 25%. The number on the roll is the film. The number an officer meters is the film and the glass together.

The glass is not 100%

Clear does not mean every bit of light gets through. Front door glass has thickness, a plastic interlayer, and often a light factory coating. It looks untinted. It is not a hole in the door. On a typical front door, about 70% of the visible light makes it through and about 30% does not. That 70% is the starting VLT, before we cut anything.

Rear glass is a different piece. A lot of it is already dark from the factory. This post is the front doors, the ones that are still relatively clear.

35% of the light that is left

The film does not replace the glass. Light has to get through both, in order. The door glass goes first. A 35% film only acts on the light the glass already let through.

Bare front-door glass usually lets about 70% of the daylight through. The film then lets 35% of that remainder through. You do not add 70 and 35. You do not average them. You take 35% of the 70 the glass passed.

35% of 70 is about 25. On a door that is a little clearer than 70, that finished reading sits just over the Texas minimum of 25%. That is the point of a 35% film on the front doors. The box says 35 because that is the film. The meter says about 25 because the glass was already in the stack. If the bare door is darker than usual, the same film can finish under 25, which is why we meter instead of trusting the box.

You did not install a 25% film. You installed a 35% film on glass that was already holding back part of the light. The two stack. One number comes off the meter, and that number has to be 25% or more.

Why a 25% film fails the front

People ask for 25% because that is the legal number they heard. The legal number is the finished glass, not the box. Run the same math with a darker film on that 70% door:

  • 35% film: 70 × 0.35, about 25% on the door. This is the front-door film.
  • 25% film: 70 × 0.25, about 18%. Under the line.
  • 20% film: 70 × 0.20, about 14%. Rear glass, not the fronts.
  • 5% film: 70 × 0.05, about 4%. A privacy shade for the back, illegal on the front doors.

A 50% film on the same door is about 35% finished. That is legal, and it is lighter than it needs to be. You gave up shade and heat rejection the 35% film would have kept while still landing at the line.

Why we still meter

“Usually 70%” is not every door. One front door reads a little clearer. Another has a light factory tint and starts under 70. If the bare glass is already darker than usual, a 35% film can finish under 25. The multiply is the reason we start at 35%. The meter is what keeps that door from slipping under the law.

We read the glass, then the plotter cuts the pattern for that vehicle. The film goes on the inside. Texas DPS meters the same way the math works: film and original glass together, and the front doors have to transmit 25% or more. Close to 25 is the goal. Under 25 is a fail, no matter what the box said.

The short version

35% film on about 70% glass is how the front door lands near 25%.
