Window Tint Percentages Explained: What the Numbers Actually Mean

October 13th, 2025. Jason Kimbler, owner, Mother’s Window Tint. Austin.

VLT is the percentage of visible light a tint film lets through — not blocks. Learn how 35%, 20%, and 5% films work, why glass itself has a VLT, and what's legal in Texas.

In Austin, the percentage on a tint film is the amount of visible light it lets through — that’s what VLT stands for, visible light transmission. So a thirty-five percent VLT film lets thirty-five percent of light in and blocks sixty-five percent. A twenty percent film lets twenty percent in and blocks eighty. And limousine tint, five percent, lets five percent in and blocks ninety-five.

The darkness stacks

Here’s what people don’t consider: the combined effect. When you tint every window on a vehicle, each one blocks its share, and the darkness stacks. Less light comes in overall, so the whole cabin feels darker than any single window would suggest.

Dark is not the same as cool

Customers walk in saying “I want it as dark as I can get.” In their mind, they’re saying they want to block out the sun entirely and just have a comfortable ride. That’s how we used to think about film before the technology got better at blocking heat. Now you don’t need darkness to get comfort — ceramic film handles the heat while letting light through.

Seeing in

The other thing people say is “I don’t want anyone to be able to see in my car.” That can happen with a dark film when there’s not much light coming in — but it’s not guaranteed. Even a five percent film still lets five percent of light through, so on a bright day, someone may still see in. At night, with your interior lights on and it dark outside, the contrast can make the cabin visible from outside.

Glass already has a VLT

One thing to consider is that glass is not perfectly clear. It already has a VLT of its own — usually around seventy percent on its own. Privacy glass on trucks and SUVs is closer to twenty percent. That’s why we put thirty-five percent film on front doors even though the Texas law is twenty-five — the combination of film and glass brings the total down closer to twenty-five, and as long as it stays above that, it’s legal. There is no magic twenty-five percent film. In fact, putting twenty-five percent film on could actually be darker than legal.

Privacy glass on the back

The rear section of privacy glass matters too. You can put limousine film, five percent, on the rear of a car and still see out relatively well at night, especially if you’re used to that darkness. But on a truck or van, that same five percent stacks on top of the twenty percent privacy glass, and it gets really hard to see out at night.

Front doors

That’s why you don’t want dark film on your front doors — not because it’s not cool, but because you’d lose the ability to see out your side mirrors. People with dark front-door film often have to roll down the window at night just to see around corners. You want to see out wherever you’re going, and you’re going forward most of the time. Once you obstruct that, it may be too dark to operate the vehicle safely.

The short version

The number is the light the film lets through. Glass already has a number of its own.
